Introduction

The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is a 7-day overland trip from Pokhara into the restricted Kingdom of Lo. It crosses the Kali Gandaki gorge and the high desert plains of Mustang to reach the walled city of Lo Manthang. Unlike a trek, this Upper Mustang Jeep Tour covers the same remote villages and monasteries by 4WD, so you get the culture and the landscape without weeks of walking.

Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Overview

Upper Mustang is behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, in their rain shadow, which is why this part of Nepal looks like a high desert instead of a green Himalayan valley. The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour was built for travellers who want to reach Lo Manthang and its old monasteries without spending two or three weeks on foot. A private 4WD jeep carries you and your group from Pokhara, along the Kali Gandaki riverbed, and up into the Kingdom of Lo.

This Upper Mustang overland jeep tour is not a soft sightseeing drive. Roads are rough, dusty and cut into cliffs in places, and altitude climbs past 3,800 metres by Day 5. Anyone reasonably fit, including older travellers who can't manage long trekking days, can handle this Upper Mustang jeep tour package comfortably, since you're sitting in a vehicle for most of the distance rather than walking it.

As Upper Mustang is a restricted area, every traveller needs a special permit and a licensed guide, which we arrange as part of this package before you leave Kathmandu. A minimum of two people is required by law to enter, so this trip works well for couples, friends and small family groups travelling together.

Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Route Overview

This Upper Mustang jeep tour from Pokhara begins with a full day of driving, or an optional short flight, from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From Pokhara, a flight or a long drive gets you to Jomsom, the gateway town to Mustang, where the jeep for the rest of the trip takes over. From Jomsom, the route runs north past Kagbeni, the old checkpoint into the restricted zone, and climbs toward Ghami.

Ghami is past 3,500 metres, and the road from here to Lo Manthang crosses open, wind-carved plateaus with views of the Dhaulagiri Himal on clear days. Lo Manthang itself is the goal and the highlight of this Upper Mustang jeep tour itinerary, a walled town with narrow lanes, whitewashed homes and monasteries that have stood since the 15th century. A full day is set aside here to explore the town, Chhoser caves and old trade routes near the Tibet border.

Return south through Muktinath, one of Nepal's most important pilgrimage sites, before the jeep brings you back to Jomsom and then Pokhara. A short flight or a final long drive closes the loop back to Kathmandu on Day 7. If you'd like to see the full route laid out before booking, our team can send you the route map along with your itinerary.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day
01
Drive from Kathmanduto Pokhara – 6 to 7 Hours Drive or Optional 35-Minute FlightHotelBreakfastPokhara Lakeside+

Your trip begins with the trip from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Most travellers drive, following the Prithvi Highway along the Trishuli River, past terraced hills and small roadside towns. It's a long day in the car, but the scenery keeps changing, and you'll get your first glimpse of the Annapurna range as you pull into Pokhara in the late afternoon.

If you'd rather skip the road time, a 35-minute flight from Kathmandu gets you to Pokhara before lunch, leaving the rest of the day free. Either way, you'll spend the night by Phewa Lake, with Machapuchare's sharp peak visible from the lakeside if the sky is clear. This is your last proper city comfort before Mustang's roads get rougher.

Day
02
Drive/Flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and Drive to Ghami – 25 Minutes and 4 to 5 Hours DriveTeahouseBreakfast | Lunch | DinnerGhami+

A short 25-minute flight (or a longer scenic drive, depending on your preference) takes you from Pokhara to Jomsom, the last real town before the restricted zone. Jomsom is in the Kali Gandaki gorge, with strong afternoon winds that funnel up the valley almost every day, so mornings are calmer for travel.

From Jomsom, your jeep heads north past Kagbeni, where officials check your Upper Mustang permit before you continue. The landscape shifts fast here, from green apple orchards near Jomsom to bare, wind-shaped cliffs as you climb toward Ghami. You'll reach Ghami by evening, a village known for one of the longest mani walls in the country, and settle in for a quiet night at altitude.

Day
03
Drive from Ghami to Lo Manthang (3,730m/12,235ft) – 3 to 4 Hours DriveTeahouseBreakfast | Lunch | DinnerGhami+

The drive from Ghami to Lo Manthang is shorter than the day before, but it's arguably the most dramatic stretch of the whole tour. The road climbs over passes strung with prayer flags and drops through valleys where the rock has eroded into towers and ridges that look almost man-made.

You'll pass small settlements like Charang, where an old fort and monastery sit above the village, before the walls of Lo Manthang finally come into view. Entering the walled city for the first time is a genuine moment on this trip, since so few outsiders ever get this far into Nepal. You'll check into your lodge here for two nights, giving your body a break from daily driving.

Day
04
Explore Lo Manthang – 6 to 8 Hours, Sightseeing at the Border, Gharphu Cave and Ancient MonasteriesTeahouseBreakfast | Lunch | DinnerLo Manthang+

Today is set aside fully for Lo Manthang, and it's the heart of this trek. You'll walk the narrow lanes inside the old city walls, visit monasteries that hold centuries-old murals and thangka paintings, and meet local families still living much as their ancestors did.

Later in the day, a short drive takes you out toward the Nepal-Tibet border for sweeping views across the plateau, and on to Gharphu cave, one of the hand-carved cave dwellings scattered through this part of Mustang.

Some of these caves are believed to be over a thousand years old, used originally for shelter, storage and meditation. By evening you're back in Lo Manthang, having covered more history in one day than most trips manage in a week.

Day
05
Drive from Lo Manthang to Muktinath, then to Jomsom – 6 to 7 Hours DriveLodgeBreakfast | Lunch | DinnerJomsom+

Leaving Lo Manthang is the start of your journey back south, and today's drive is long but full of good stops. The road retraces part of your route through Ghami and Tsarang before turning toward Muktinath, one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Nepal for both Hindus and Buddhists.

At Muktinath, you can visit the temple complex, see its 108 water spouts, and watch pilgrims who've travelled from across South Asia to be here. From Muktinath, the jeep continues down to Jomsom, back at a friendlier altitude, where you'll spend the night before the final leg of the trip toward Pokhara.

Day
06
Drive/Flight from Jomsom to Pokhara (800m/2,624ft) – 25 Minutes FlightHotelBreakfastPokhara+

A short flight from Jomsom brings you back to Pokhara by mid-morning, weather permitting, since Jomsom's flights run early to avoid the afternoon winds. Those who'd rather stay on the ground can continue by jeep instead, taking in the last stretch of the Kali Gandaki valley one more time.

Once you're back in Pokhara, the rest of the day is free. If your onward flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu needs booking, our ticketing service can sort that for you too. After five days on rough Mustang roads, most travellers are happy to slow down by Phewa Lake, get a proper hot shower, and enjoy a full night's sleep at a lower, warmer altitude.

Day
07
Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu – 6 to 7 Hours Drive or Optional 35-Minute Flight+

The final day of the trip retraces the route back to Kathmandu, either by road along the Trishuli River or on a short flight if you'd prefer to save the hours. Either way, you'll arrive back in the capital with a phone full of photos from a part of Nepal that most travellers never get to see.

From here, your trip wraps up with a transfer to your hotel or straight to the airport, depending on your onward plans. If you have extra days in Nepal, our team is happy to help you add a short city tour or a few relaxed days before you fly home.

Frequently asked

How much does the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour cost? +
Pricing depends on your group size, your choice of hotels in Pokhara and Kathmandu, and the season you travel in. As a rough guide, most tour packages of this length fall somewhere between USD 1,000 and USD 3,000 per person, with private groups and luxury lodges sitting at the higher end. Message our team with your dates and group size, and we'll send you an exact price for this trek.
What's included in the Upper Mustang permit cost? +
The Restricted Area Permit, now USD 50 per person per day, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit at around USD 30 per person, are the two main government fees on this trip. Both are collected and processed on your behalf as part of your booking with us, so the figure you're quoted already accounts for them.
Is a guide required for this trip? +
Yes, a licensed guide is a legal requirement for entry into the restricted area, not just a nice extra. Our guides also double as your main source of local knowledge once you're past Jomsom, since English signage and services largely disappear beyond that point.
How many days do I need for a short trip on this route into the Kingdom of Lo? +
Seven days, as in this itinerary, is enough to reach Lo Manthang, explore it properly for a full day, and return to Kathmandu without rushing. Shorter versions exist, but they usually cut the time spent inside Lo Manthang itself, which is the part of the trip most travellers remember best.
What is the best time to do an Upper Mustang overland jeep tour? +
Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons, thanks to stable weather and clear mountain views, with spring adding the bonus of the Tiji Festival. Because Mustang sits in a rain shadow, this is also one of the few parts of Nepal where a summer trip still works well.
How high does the tour go? +
The highest point on this route is Lo Manthang and the surrounding plateau, at roughly 3,800 metres. That's high enough to feel the thinner air, but well below the altitudes that make classic Everest or Annapurna treks physically demanding.
Is this trip difficult, or easier than trekking? +
It's considerably easier on the body than trekking to the same places, since you're riding in a 4WD jeep rather than walking for hours each day. That said, the roads are rough and the altitude is real, so it's not a fully relaxed sightseeing drive either.
What should I pack for this trip package? +
Warm layers for cold nights, a windproof jacket for Mustang's strong daytime winds, sunglasses and sunscreen for the high-altitude sun, and cash in Nepali rupees are the essentials. A dust mask or scarf also helps on the dustier stretches of road between Jomsom and Lo Manthang.
Can families or older travellers join this tour? +
Yes, this is one of the more accessible ways for families and older travellers to see Upper Mustang, since it removes the physical demands of a multi-week trek. We do ask that anyone with serious back, heart or mobility concerns speak with us before booking, given the rough road conditions.
Can I combine this trip with a luxury this route upgrade? +
Yes, we can upgrade your hotels in Pokhara and Kathmandu, and arrange better lodges along the route, for travellers who want more comfort on this trip. Just let us know at the time of booking, and we'll adjust your tour package accordingly.
Is this trip available all year round? +
It runs for most of the year, though winter can occasionally bring snow that closes higher sections of road for a day or two. Our team checks conditions before every departure and will tell you honestly if your chosen dates need adjusting.
Can I customize this trip itinerary? +
Yes, this itinerary can be adjusted around your dates, your pace and the size of your group, since most of our trips run as private departures. Tell us what you have in mind through our plan your trip page, and we'll shape the trip around it rather than the other way around.
